Anecdotal Japan is a short collection of stories relating to the seven years I spent living in Tokyo in my 20s. The stories are intended mostly to entertain, and to offer my thoughts and feelings about Japanese society and my experience as a part of it. The book is also my way of sharing with my family and friends what I did during my years away from them. The stories I offer here are the ones I feel are most complete and best articulated, although there are many, many more.

James Gregory modestly describes this as simply a book for family and friends, but this is also a fascinating insight into life in Japan and some of the random things that sometime happen when westerners visit Japan and master Japanese.As someone who has has a similar experience myself, I was really interested in it and was curious to know how life would have been like if I'd stayed on in Japan. Like James, I nearly ended up working in Tokyo, went through all the interviews, got a job, but eventually bottled it (and Japanese) and came back home to Britain. Tokyo sounds a tough place to work, but also an incredible experience!
I liked the fact it focused on three anecdotal stories, which are all unique and hillarious in their own varied ways, and also made the read tightly articulated. It is also one of those books that gives you an insight into a unique life experience, and leaves you wanting to find out more!
An excellent read and certainly recommended!

James Gregory does a fantastic job putting his past experiences to paper. This book begins with a story of a young man with an interest he intends to explore and quickly turns into a narrative of a foreigners experience in a totally foreign culture. The book is an easy read yet compelling all the while. This book will take you from tiny university taverns to Karaoke bars full of business executives in a natural style. I picked up this book one evening and was torn when I had to part with it six hours later. It is easy to get pulled into this world and find yourself completely absorbed in the adventure. My only complaint is that there are some mentions of situations that were left out of this book -- I'd hope to see them in a follow up solely to satisfy my curiosity. I highly recommend it.
Anecdotal Japan is a book to which any reader can relate to in an instant. James Gregory does an outstanding job in creating a personal atmosphere for the entire book, and ensures readers that they are are never lost in the story he is telling. The portrayals told by James Gregory are easily relatable, even though I've never worked on a cook line, or have lived in Japan; I was seemingly placed in a world, where I was at James' side during his incredible journey.
The vivid descriptions of the stories which James speaks about, puts the reader right in the middle of the tale, to where readers can hear, see and even recount the story, as if they were there themselves.
This book kept me laughing and entertained fully from beginning to end. Thank you James, I look forward to your next book.
